Citalopram may also be prescribed off-label for other conditions.

How does celexa work?

Citalopram belongs to a group of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Celexa works by stopping the reuptake of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that affects mood, so that more serotonin is available, and more, is available to treat depression and anxiety disorders. While Celexa is effective for treating depression, anxiety disorders, and other anxiety-related conditions, it may not work for all types of anxiety.

How long does celexa take to work?

Citalopram may start working within 1-2 weeks of taking it. The length of treatment for anxiety varies from person to person, but it normally works for up to 4-6 weeks. Once you finish the course of treatment, other medications, and/or supplements, the medication may not be effective in managing your symptoms.

Can celexa cause weight gain?

It’s possible, but not confirmed. Weight gain is a possibility, but it’s not a complete reason to avoid treatment with celexa. Discuss all your current medications, supplements, and herbal therapies with your doctor to see if celexa is right for you.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking celexa?

You should not take celexa if you are allergic to citalopram or any of the other ingredients in celexa. If you have a history of bipolar disorder or experience any other mental health issues, such as major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or mania, you should seek help immediately.

Do not use celexa if you are allergic to any ingredients in celexa or any of its ingredients. If you are taking any other antidepressant, antibiotic, antipsychotic, or mood stabilizer medication, seek medical attention immediately.

Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that also works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin in the brain. Like other medications that you take to treat depression or anxiety, celexa may cause a variety of side effects. However, not all of these side effects are typically serious.

Citalopram may take 1-2 weeks to work. If your side effects continue for a longer period, you may be able to take celexa for as long as you need to.

Are there any interactions with other medications?

Yes, some medications can affect celexa. However, not all of them are considered significant by their names. Some medications can cause more side effects, while others can affect your daily life or breathing pattern. It’s important to speak with your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) that treat epilepsy
  • Other medications that contain citalopram
  • Amphetamines

Some of the names that have a strong association with celexa include:

  • Chlordiazepoxide
  • Clozapine
  • Alprazolam
  • Allegra
  • Anagrelide
  • Amphetamine
  • Ativan

The list here is far and may be incomplete. But let’s look at this further.

If you're dealing with anxiety disorders or experiencing insomnia, there are a variety of effective treatments available that may be able to help you sleep better without the risks and complications of prescription drugs.

These medications, sometimes known as SSRIs, work by reducing the activity levels of certain chemicals in the brain, known as brain chemicals. These chemicals are responsible for making sleep easier.

If your symptoms are related to your anxiety, it may be easier to sleep through the drugs than through your prescription drug regimen.

SSRI treatments can be effective

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are one type of medication that may be effective. These drugs work by slowing down the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain. This is one of the ways SSRIs are able to improve sleep. However, they are not all the same.

SSRIs are also known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). SSRIs work by stopping the reuptake of serotonin. This is why some people have poor sleep quality and others have poor sleep quality.

Another way to think of an SSRI treatment is by using it to reduce anxiety levels. Anxiety is just one type of anxiety disorder.

You can also use antidepressants for a while to get some relief. These medications are sometimes used to treat depression or anxiety. They also are used for sleep issues.

SSRI treatments may be dangerous

The risks of taking too much of an SSRI medication and not getting enough sleep are many things. Some people can get a condition called

which means that they have too much serotonin in their brain. This causes symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Another way to think of an SSRI treatment is that it can be dangerous. Too much serotonin can lead to the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and a poor sleep quality.

This is why doctors often prescribe an SSRI when they think it is helping you. If you are unsure about what SSRIs are and want to know more about the risks of taking them, talk with your doctor.

The good news is that SSRIs are not the only option.

Both Celexa (citalopram) and Lexapro (escitalopram) are antidepressants that are used to treat major depressive disorder. Celexa is the generic of Lexapro. It is also the name of an SSRI called Lexapro.

Both Lexapro and Celexa can cause side effects. However, it's important to talk with your doctor before taking any medication to make sure you're taking an appropriate amount.

If you're taking any medication, be sure to tell your doctor about it so that your doctor can tell if there are any problems with the medication. Your doctor will probably want to do a blood test to check for depression. It is not uncommon for your doctor to want to do this.

Tell your doctor if you have any other mental health issues, including a history of bipolar disorder or eating disorders, as this may change the risk of taking too much of an SSRI.

Taking SSRIs for a long time can cause side effects.
